My numbers are empty or look wrong

Why a new site shows little data, and why figures can differ from the Search Console screens.

Nothing is showing yet

  • Search Console reports late. The newest data is about 3 days old, so the last few days are empty everywhere.
  • The first read is still running. Up to 16 months of history is read after connecting, and a large site takes longer.
  • The site has little search traffic yet. Search Console only has data for searches where Google showed your pages. A new site can have very little.
  • The property does not cover the pages. A domain property covers every subdomain and both http and https. A URL-prefix property covers only addresses starting with that exact prefix, so https://www.example.com does not include https://example.com.

The numbers differ from Search Console

  • Rare searches are hidden. Google leaves out searches too rare to share without identifying someone. Totals by search therefore add up to less than totals by page, in Search Console too. AEOptimiz keeps the two apart rather than adding them together.
  • Different dates. Search Console dates are in Pacific Time. Compare the same date range on both sides.
  • Averaged positions. Average position is weighted by impressions, so a page shown once at position 1 and a thousand times at position 20 averages close to 20.
